Aspen in May

May 5, 2017
There is no arguing that Aspen is one of the world's most famous mountain resorts. Even though it is true to say that the superb skiing is what put this historic mining town on the world traveler's map, these days Aspen has become much more than a ski destination. The sophisticated shopping and dining, the eclectic art scene and the pristine mountain setting are attracting visitors year round. The mouth of May is a great time to visit Aspen - the days are warm but the mountain peaks are still snowy, the crowds are gone and you will have the charming town to yourself.

Enjoy the outdoors
It might snow in the morning but the warm May sun will dry the trials pretty quickly. There are plenty of south facing trails near town that are ready to be enjoined in early spring both on foot or bike.  One of the most famous among locals is the Smuggler Mountain Road. This is a 3 mile round trip trail conveniently located right outside down town. It is a dirt road, mixed use trail that offers incredible views of the town and the Roaring Fork Valley. Another good choice for a spring hike is the Rio Grande Trail.  This is a relatively easy and beautiful, rugged path suitable for any age and skill level. The trail begins in downtown Aspen and goes for miles and miles all the way to Basalt. It’s a stroller-friendly, easy way to take in views of the river as snowmelt rages over rapids.  For a bit more challenging hike you might want to check the Sunnyside Trail. It usually melts pretty early in the spring and offers a 11.2 mile loop up and around the summit of Red Mountain in Aspen.

Plan your spring visit for May 20th and take part in one of the most fun bike rides/ races in the state. The Ride for the Pass is a recreational ride and road bike race up Highway 82 toward Independence Pass that allows riders to enjoy this beautiful Scenic Byway before it is opened to cars for the season. The Ride benefits the Independence Pass Foundation’s restoration work on the Pass.  The Ride is followed by a party at the St. Regis featuring fantastic raffle prizes & giveaways.  You have the option to ride the traditional 10 miles to the ghost town of Independence or do the family-friendly 2+ miles to the Weller Lake turnout.
